He was Professor of Economics at New York University, Professor of International Economics at Helsinki University, Associate Professor of Economics at Yale University (Cowles Foundation), Research Fellow at The Institute for International Economics Studies at Stockholm University, and an Assistant Professor of Economics at Stanford University.

His Ph.D. Dissertation Essays was on the Theory of Flexible Exchange Rates at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Pentti Kouri retains the title of Professor having been appointed a Professor by the President of Finland in 1980.
